2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 21,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 8 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

URGENT MESSAGE FOR CARNACKI: THE NEW ADVENTURES CONTRIBUTORS!!!!!!!!!!!

Since Sunday, I have been unable to access my yahoo email.  Because of this, I cannot access the emails of proof corrections which have been sent.

PLEASE, if you have sent me your corrections, RESEND them to this email: the_great_gaffsam@yahoo.com which, for the moment, is still working.

This interruption was completely unanticipated and has thrown the processing for the final text of this book into complete chaos.  If we have any hope of making a publication date this month, and hopefully by next week, I need to hear from you NOW!

Sorry for the alarm but I am completely frustrated with this situation and yahoo has been absolutely no help in this situation.

New Hodgson Anthology Coming Soon!

41a52vtZ9FL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_S.T. Joshi has informed me that his new collection of Hodgson’s fiction, titled simply William Hope Hodgson, will be available from the publisher on January 14, 2014.  It’s being published by Centipede Press which did a huge, slip-cased omnibus edition of Hodgson some time ago but this volume is considerably less expensive and part of a series edited by Joshi called “Library of Weird Fiction”.  I believe the other volumes are collections of Lovecraft, Blackwood and Poe so ol’ WHH is in some fine company indeed!

The book can currently be pre-ordered via Amazon at this link:

http://www.amazon.com/William-Hope-Hodgson/dp/1613470495/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386184626&sr=8-1&keywords=william+hope+hodgson+joshi

Amazon is currently listing it at $45.60 which is a 24% off of the cover price.  I highly recommend that everyone order this book not only for the stories but also the introduction by S.T. Joshi as well as what are billed as “rare photographs of Hodgson”.

The collection includes THE HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND and THE GHOST PIRATES as well as a selection of the short fiction.  I know that S.T. has taken great pains to make sure that the texts are accurate and reflect, where possible, first appearances.  Let’s give this edition a lot of support so that hopefully we will see more Hodgson volumes in the future!

RARE Hodgson dust jacket!

I recently heard from Richard Humphries, a Hodgson collector, who had an interesting question.

He was wondering if there were any existing dust jackets for the Holden & Hardingham edition of CAPTAIN GAULT or if it were scarce?

Doing a little investigation, I found that I could not find any examples of this particular dust jacket in any of my references.  Also, the internet was similarly bereft.  I could find no postings of a cover and certainly no edition with dust jacket currently listed for sale anywhere.

Therefore, the conclusion was that this dust jacket is indeed rare and scarce which would affect the book’s value considerably.

Mr. Humphries was kind enough to provide a scan of the cover and permission to reprint it here.  It is indeed an interesting cover and, although I cannot pinpoint which story it illustrates, it does keep somewhat to the theme of Gault having to deal with troublesome women!

I hope you all enjoy this peek at a true Hodgson rarity!
